SONISPHERE – DAY ONE WRAP UP

Knebworth – We’re not worthy

His head was sheared off with a guillotine, he was whipped, injected by poison and hung the old-fashioned British way. Oh, and among a lot of other borderline lunacy, he ended up snogging a rubber doll. Just another regular Friday night for Alice Cooper then.

He only had one complaint: “The crowd weren’t quite close enough to get any blood on them.” It’s been almost 30 years since our Friday night headliner played a festival in the UK. Why did he take so long to return?

“I don’t know. We played at Reading in the eighties, but I think promoters were just scared of something theatrical,” he says. “I think tonight showed they didn’t need to be.”

“Thank God this festival has promoters with balls,” as one happy punter put it after a stunt-packed set that begun and ended with ‘School’s Out’. “There were so many people out there I just couldn’t see,” says Alice. “I normally focus on people to sing to, but not tonight.”

Will you come back to Sonisphere? “Oh, definitely.”

After Alice’s set the party in the Bohemia tent hosted by Bizarre went into overdrive and got a little out of hand. One women (with a prosthetic penis) paused her simulated buggery to spray the crowd with milk (at least we think it was milk) from fake breasts strapped to her backside. Then there was a mechanical horse shooting fire out of its hind flanks, some flying bug women spinning down into the crowd from the ceiling and a Zebra dominatrix or two who just couldn’t stop wrestling.

Bizarre employ the kind of performing girls (or guys or gender-confused people) that you’d imagine would go out with tonight’s headliners Rammstein. In fact it wouldn’t surprise us if some of them hang around for Rammstein’s after party. Apparently they’ve ordered two grand’s worth of vodka, booked Hertfordshire’s leading 80s pop DJ (he also does weddings) and according to one of Sabaton invited some fire-breathing midgets to serve the drinks.

Earlier in the evening, Terrorvision played a set packed with their hits including stand-out versions of ‘Perseverance’ and ‘Oblivion’. They dedicated ‘Alice What’s The Matter’ to Mr Cooper and ended with an explosive rendition of ‘Whales and Dolphins’. Before Alice Cooper Gary Numan served up one of the heaviest sets he’s ever played. Appearing at his first real metal festival he established himself firmly with the rock community.

And so to today, Sabaton are currently playing an inspirational battle metal set. “That is scary,” our photographer just told us. The kind of thing to wake up and work into a frenzy anyone still lazing in their tent. Anyone who wasn’t already alerted into action by Family Force 5’s basslines that set off car alarms all across the site. Later there’s Corey Taylor’s second-ever UK solo set, Motley Crue, Placebo, Anthrax, Good Charlotte and, of course, Rammstein with their first-ever UK festival appearance. See you in the pit!!

The A.v.D, keyboard/samples man with London Industrial Metal Mob THE DEFILED has checked in with the following statement ahead of their recently announced appearance at SONISPHERE FESTIVAL 2010:

“Well, the life style that we lead in The Defiled has taken its toll on one of our brothers… It is with great regret that today we finally announce that Drex has decided to leave the band. His decision to leave was made quite a few months ago, hence why we have been so quiet in the first half of 2010. All the members will miss him for different reasons but I think he was the voice of reason and the only member that ever brought any kind of normality to the band. It's not all doom and gloom in the camp though! We happened to meet a reprobate called Vincent Hyde that is mentally ill enough to step up and take his rightful place in The Defiled. He’s been rehearsing with us these past few months, and we are going to be showing off our brand new sick little puppy this Sunday at Sonisphere, Come Get Some!”

THE DEFILED play SONISPHERE’s BOHEMIA stage at 12:25 Sunday 1st August

CATHEDRAL CELEBRATE 20 YEARS WITH ORIGINAL LINE UP

The year 2010 marks the Twentieth Anniversary of Cathedral and in order to commemorate the occasion the band will perform a one-off show on December 3rd 2010 at the O2 Academy in Islington, North London.

For one night only Cathedral will be performing two sets, including the entirety of their landmark debut album and Doom Metal classic 'Forest of Equilibrium' where Lee Dorrian and Garry Jennings will be joined by the recording line up Mark “Griff” Griffiths, Adam Lehan and Mike Smail.

This will be followed by a second set of songs performed by the current line up of Lee Dorian, Garry Jennings, Brian Dixon & Leo Smee.

Vocalist Lee Dorrian elaborates: “Cathedral has come along way since those dirge-ridden smoke-filled, cheap lager and sweat infested early rehearsals back in 1990. To be brutally honest, back then we never imagined that we would have continued on a twenty year journey and still be here to tell the tale”.

“A lot of bands that have been around this long tend to shy away from their roots, in favour of more ‘accessible’ material that they wrote in their “maturing” stages. Well, despite the fact that we may have expanded on our sound and style since those early days, we are certainly not embarrassed by our origins, in fact the opposite is true. To commemorate (Commiserate?) this twenty year marathon, we thought it would be a cool idea to regroup the line up of our first studio album for a special one-off show, and perform it in it’s entirety. Fortunately, everyone from those days agreed. This will mark the beginning of the evening, which will be followed by a set of material ‘post-Forest’ bringing us right up to date with our latest album, ‘The Guessing Game’. We are excited about this event and look forward to seeing you there”.

STAGE TIMES REVEALED PLUS OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION

STAGE TIMES REVEALED PLUS OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION

Just four more days to go before the international touring festival SONISPHERE arrives at KNEBWORTH, UK, bringing with it an incredible line up including headliners IRON MAIDEN and RAMMSTEIN’s only UK shows of 2010, exclusive outdoor appearances from ALICE COOPER, ALICE IN CHAINS, ANTHRAX, BRING ME THE HORIZON, CKY, DIR EN GREY, HENRY ROLLINS, LACUNA COIL, MÖTLEY CRÜE, PAPA ROACH, SLAYER, THERAPY? – who will play their “Troublegum” album in it’s entirety – and many many more. In addition to this, a wealth of musical, comedic and other entertaining talent come together to make SONISPHERE the highlight of the summer rock calendar.

All that’s left to do now is plan your weekend to make sure you catch all the bands you want to see, so here is the full running order of acts/stages. Why not use the personal itinerary planner on the Sonisphere mobile app? Available on iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Java from uk.sonispherefestivals.com/apps, this handy tool also gives you full and updated to stage times throughout the weekend plus an event map, special announcements, photos and special offers, including a FREE PINT OF STRONGBOW in the Bowtime Bar!

As you may have gathered, team SONISPHERE has worked hard to make sure you get the most out of the weekend. As one of the principle bookers informs us:

“As last year, we've tried our best to ensure we avoid the inevitable festival band “clashes”. We are all rock fans and dedicated festivalgoers in this office, so we always look at things from the point of view of our customer. Our two main stages will yet again play alternatively, plus we’ve timed the other stages by genre rather than perceived popularity to avoid forcing fans to make painful decisions. So if you don’t like Pendulum, you can go see Malefice, if you don’t like Anthrax, you can catch Futures, if Madina Lake is not your thing you can check out The Defiled… see you in the pit!”

When you’re planning your weekend, don’t forget to get yourself down to the SATURN stage at 6pm on Friday to be part of the Time Warp World Record Attempt!

Here’s a little information to help make your weekend run smoothly; Remember to keep your wits about you and look out for one another and most importantly have a good time!

TRAVEL
Getting to Knebworth Park is EASY! Only 25 minutes from London and 2 hours from Birmingham, Knebworth is right on the A1(M) and served by a mainline train station. Add to that the FREE shuttle service and coach packages offered by Sonisphere and you can be sure you will be standing in front of the Apollo stage in no time!

COACHES
Coaches are still available to book through the website. This is a cheap and environmentally friendly way to get dropped off at the gates.

SHUTTLES
A FREE shuttle bus service will run during the scheduled train timings from Stevenage Train Station to the Sonisphere site starting at 1pm on the Thursday and ending once you have all gone on Monday. It will be a continuous service rather than at set times.
BY RAIL
The nearest useable rail station is Stevenage, two miles away. Check www.firstcapitalconnect.co.uk for train schedules.
Please note that there will be NO festival access from Knebworth Train Station. You must use Stevenage station.

BY ROAD
There are two entrances to the site which are accessed via junction 7 and 8 of the A1(M) motorway, 10 miles north of the M25. Signage on the A1(M) will direct you to the appropriate entrance. If using Sat Nav systems, please use the postcode SG1 2AX to direct you till you pick up the road signage.
Ample parking is available on site. Parking can still be booked via the ticket page in advance for £10 or on the day for £20. There is no restriction on re-entry. Please car share where you can!
More information is available on the website

WHAT I SHOULD AND SHOULD NOT BRING

It’s always good to be prepared so think about things you’ll need. Camping equipment, waterproofs, sunscreen, travel documents, ID (if you’re lucky enough to look under 25). Remember to lock away valuables in a locker or your car where possible.

We do not allow gas to be brought into the campsite (this includes Rock Royalty camping) though you can bring a solid fuel stove or barbeque.

You can bring food and drink into the campsite.. Alcohol will be not allowed into the arena.

We are happy for you to bring small digital cameras but we cannot allow you to bring SLR’s into the Arena.

OPENING TIMES
Early Entry Camping (includes all camping areas) – from 3pm on Thursday 29th July
General Camping – from 12noon on Friday 30th July

Bohemia / Arena – 5pm on Thursday 29th July till 3am Sunday 1st August.

Day Tickets – from 12noon on Friday
from 8am on Saturday & Sunday

The campsite closes on Monday at 2pm

If you suddenly decide you’d like to camp, come early, buy a locker or bring your car – you can pay for all of this on the day and prices are on the ticket page on the website. However, it will cost you more on the day so if you can, purchase in advance. (Camping upgrades are only available from the box office on site )

ONCE YOU ARRIVE

When you arrive make sure you put valuables somewhere secure. There are lockers in bohemia. If you choose to leave stuff in your car make sure everything is out of sight and remember to lock it!

If you’re looking for information about where, what and when everything is going on then head to the Festival Information point in Bohemia. They will also be able to help you out with any troubles you may have, advise you on the best things to do on site and even tell you where you can recycle your rubbish.

The welfare tent which is located opposite the Bohemia stage will be able to help you should you run into any trouble and will also be dealing with lost property across the weekend and after the event. They are a lovely bunch and even if you just want a chat they’ll be happy to see you.

There is a police station on site should you need any assistance situated at the top of the campsite next to the entrance to Bohemia. If you see anything you want to talk to someone about or that looks suspicious then you can call our crime stoppers number anonymously on 020 3328 9849 and remember, if you’re worried at any point or see something that makes you feel uncomfortable then you can tell a steward or a police officer.

When watching the bands we all know it can get a bit packed at the front so if you get hot or tired then step a bit further back and take a breather. Those of you who like to be squashed like sardines look out for those who want to step out and give them a hand.

Sonisphere fans last year brought a brilliant spirit of community to the festival; let’s keep it going this year. Help each other out and we’ll help you out – see you in the Bohemia bar…

SONISPHERE takes place at KNEBWORTH HOUSE July 30th – August 1st 2010

Tickets for SONISPHERE KNEBWORTH are still available from www.sonispherefestivals.com – with a full weekend ticket going for just £132.50, no booking fee and a host of exclusive performances there is no better value for UK Festival Fans this summer!

BACKGROUND NOTES
Having established itself as the “Best New Festival” at the 2009 UK Festival Awards and holding six out of eight of the nominations for the forthcoming “Best New Festival” category at the European Festival Awards, SONISPHERE FESTIVAL moves forward proudly with the announcement of their phenomenal 2010 headliners. Last year’s SONISPHERE saw 300,000 music fans attend six festivals across the continent, taking in The Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Finland, and the UK. Boasting a line-up covering a truly broad spectrum of the rock scene, headliners Metallica led a diverse collection of acts from country to country including Slipknot, Lamb Of God, Anthrax, Linkin Park, The Prodigy, The Hives and many more, to make the inaugural tour a huge success.

This year, SONISPHERE expands to eleven events with headliners including Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Rammstein. With an extremely impressive line up already shaping up across all eleven shows, this groundbreaking travelling rock circus is set to be an even bigger success in 2010, as it solidifies its position as the world’s leading rock festival series.

METAL 2 THE MASSES – FINAL WINNERS ANNOUNCED

COLLAPSE ADDED TO SOPHIE LANCASTER STAGE

The special 10th anniversary of BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR 2010 is less than a month away. Featuring metal giants such as OPETH, CHILDREN OF BODOM, FEAR FACTORY, TWISTED SISTER, plus a special guest slot filled by MESHUGGAH, BLOODSTOCK is the only outdoor true metal festival in the UK.
With a reputation for introducing new bands to the world of Metal, BLOODSTOCK is also the place to find the best of the unsigned talent, the names who will be on everyone’s lips in the not too distant future, via the huge unsigned initiative known as METAL 2 THE MASSES.

Now, with just four weeks to go, the final winners can be revealed, plus a full rundown of the Saturday line up.

BOURNEMOUTH – METAL 2 THE MASSES WINNERS

FLAYED DISCIPLE
Following the success of 2009's debut EP 'Drawn Viscera', Flayed Disciple have now completed their 2010 self titled EP, containing two new tracks 'Ejaculate While Killing' and 'Exodus', keeping to their soldering iron-hot, thrashing death metal style. Their new EP oozes brutality & potential, showing labels, promoters & the metal industry just how far the band has come, progressively & evolutionarily. Flayed Disciple have set themselves a goal for the future of complete worldwide release of a full length album, and touring in as many countries that will have them. 2010 is purely the beginning for a band that has worked extremely hard to get where they are today, and who has plenty left in them to be lasting faces on the worldwide metal scene.
WEBSITE – www.flayeddisciple.com

BLOODSTOCK are also proud to announce the addition of up and comers COLLAPSE. Drawing from the European melodic metal of acts such as The Haunted and Carcass, infused with the crushing grooves of US bands like Lamb of God and Pantera, COLLAPSE are bound to go down a storm at the SOPHIE LANCASTER stage on the Friday. Says frontman Duncan Wilkinson:

“We can’t wait to play Bloodstock! And on Friday the 13th too! Not only is it perfect timing for us as we’ve just finished in the studio, but it will also see us sharing the stage with some of our personal heroes and musical influences. Bloodstock has gone from strength to strength and this year looks set to be a real stormer. See you down the front “

The BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR METAL FESTIVAL 2010 will take place at Catton Hall, Derbyshire from 12th – 15th August.

Weekend tickets are on sale now at www.bloodstock.uk.com

Steel Panther Join Ozzfest Line Up

STEEL PANTHER are the latest band to be confirmed for the UK leg of OZZFEST 2010. The sunset strip quartet, famed for their outrageously funny and profane shows – where no one is safe from ridicule – make a welcome return to the UK after their recent appearance at Download, and hosting OZZFEST media partner METAL HAMMER MAGAZINE’s GOLDEN GODS AWARDS.

The legendary touring behemoth that is OZZFEST hits the UK with a one-off date at London’s O2 arena on September 18th 2010. Headliner OZZY OSBOURNE will be accompanied on the main stage by KORN, MURDERDOLLS, STEEL PANTHER and SKINDRED, with more acts still to be announced for the second stage. In addition to the music on offer, OZZY and co will take over the entire O2 complex, offering up a Village Of The Damned, with fairground rides, stalls and tattooists.

The 2010 package will be the first UK OZZFEST show in over five years, and is also the first time the O2 features a general admission format on the lower bowl; GA ticket holders will be able to choose between watching the show from seats, or the specially enlarged standing area. Top level tickets will also be available offering the usual seating.

18.09.2010 OZZFEST 2010 O2 Arena Greenwich, London

Tickets are available from 0871 230 5595, www.kililive.com and usual outlets.
